The chilling video was released more than 40 years ago to prepare UK citizens for a nuclear attack from the Soviet Union. It came as part of the “Protect and Survive” guide that was handed out during Margaret Thatcher’s Government during the Cold War in the late Seventies and early Eighties. Its purpose was to advise the public on how to act in the event of an imminent nuclear threat.

The information series, which was released to the public, was issued through pamphlets, radio broadcasts and films.

One part of a video, which was broadcasted on state TV, discussed how Britons should seek refuge from nuclear fallout – the residual radioactive material propelled into the upper atmosphere following a nuclear blast.

It advised: “You should create a fallout room in your home.

“Your fallout room will protect you, but you can make it even safer by strengthening a small part of it.

“This part will be your inner refuge during the worst of the attack.

“Making a refuge is not difficult – the main things you will need are a shovel, boxes, cartons or large plastic bags – start collecting them now.

“These things may also come in handy: A hammer, saw, screwdriver, nails, screw, string and scissors.”

The video went on to reveal how the public could increase their chances of survival by strengthening their shelter.

It added: “One idea is to rest some wood on the inside of a strong wall – strong boards or doors taken off their hinges.
