Around 2,300 people have pledged to join in on the action organised by Extinction Rebellion, an eco-activist group. From 11am on Monday, demonstrators will disrupt the flow of vehicles at four key sites in the capital, as they respond to the movement’s call to “rebel - and have a damn good time doing it”. Protests at Oxford Circus, Parliament Square, Waterloo Bridge and Marble Arch will each have a different theme, but will be held under the same banner.

Extinction Rebellion said it does not necessarily want to cause delays to motorists but “our Government’s failure over the last 30 years leaves us no choice”.

A spokesperson for the group said: “Come to London to stay- this is not a one-day march. Book two weeks off work, or go on strike.”

They added: “Under our current system, we are headed for disaster. Catastrophic climate breakdown will cause food collapse, destroy communities, kill millions and rend many more homeless.”
