Google Maps' team left some troubled on a recent outing, during which horrifying images of a lake were revealed. The camera crew ventured to Iraq’s Sadr City to track the area, as part of its mission capturing the sights and geographical details of the world. Quite often, their trips go without incident. Yet this could not have been further from the case during the visit to the Middle East, where the scarlet lake was seen.
The stretch of water, called Lago Vermelho, is found just outside the suburb of Baghdad, perhaps in an area not as well populated.
The lake runs through the city and is separated with sections of concrete and crossings.
It was within one of the middle panels of water that showed the bright red colour, which had the appearance of blood.
After it was revealed, speculation was rife as to what had sparked the worrying shade.
A source told the blog Boing Boing he had been told it was from nearby slaughter houses, with animal bodies dumped into the water, a claim, which has not been verified.
