Experts said our expose laid bare a terrifying breakdown in law and order and prompted demands for more frontline police.

There were also demands for them to be equipped with increased stop and search powers to halt the appalling trend in weapon carrying.

John Apter, chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales, said: "We are in the grip of a national knife crime crisis where we are in danger of it becoming a cultural norm for some to carry weapons. These figures are an indicator of just how brazen some people are.

"The fact anybody would even consider taking a knife or even a firearm into a court is not only astounding but deeply concerning."

The shocking scale of weapons carried by court users was unearthed in Ministry of Justice statistics showing the number of knives, razor blades, bladed instruments and weapons confiscated from individuals attempting to enter court buildings in England and Wales since 2013/14.

The number of knives seized included 10,459 which were more than 3in long and 34,224 under 3ins.

While the number of larger knives seized has dropped, confiscations of knives and blades under 3ins – including cutlery and scissors – has rocketed by 115 percent.

However, the number of potentially fatal items confiscated is much higher.

This is because officials exclude from the analysis other items, like work tools, that could be used as a weapon.

Under the category of "genuine firearms" were weapons such as airguns and Taser stun guns.

Conservative MP David Davies, a former special constable and father-of-three, said: "These figures highlight a total lack of respect and contempt for the law that exists in our society because people are turning up to court, presumably as defendants or witnesses, blatantly carrying weapons.

"We need to change the law to allow proper stop and search to take place because people are dying on our streets. The Government was mistaken to make it harder to carry out stop and search. We need to examine if we should be spending as much money last on foreign aid as we do on policing."

These figures come against a backdrop of horrific violence on Britain's streets with 36 murders already in London this year.

The Police Federation said the new data reflected the crisis currently engulfing the UK.

In roughly two out of every five killings victims are fatally assaulted with a sharp object or stabbed to death.

The number of knife-related murders fell from 272 in 2007 to 186 in 2015.

But since then it has risen every year with a sharp increase in 2017/2018 when there were 285 killings, the highest figure since 1946.

One in four victims were men aged 18 to 24.

Mr Apter said: "Solving this epidemic requires a holistic
