Head of the campaign group, Republic, Graham Smith insisted public opinion on the monarchy is changing. While 20-30 years ago, the British public may have been widely supportive of the royals, as we progress through the early stages of the 21st century, that opinion may be beginning to be challenged. Speaking to Express.co.uk, Mr Smith said: “Small-r republicanism is manifesting itself in things like Brexit.

“People no longer see themselves as subjects to this part of the London establishment.

“They see themselves as citizens and they want to assert their views, opinions and their rights.”

Republic’s main aim is to bring in a head of state, that is not accountable for its action but is also democratically elected.

The group openly states on its website in place of Her Majesty they want someone “chosen by the people, not running the Government but representing the nation independently of our politicians.”
