#Chimerica writer reveals how Brexit 'shame' led to major change

While the Channel 4 programme may be a brand new concept for some viewers, others will know it is a adaption of the 2013 play of the same name.

Writer Lucy Kirkwood originally set the theatrical version around the events of the 2012 presidential election, which saw Barack Obama re-elected.

However, for the Channel 4 series, Lucy updated the political events surrounding the main story to focus on the 2016 US election which saw Donald Trump triumph over Hillary Clinton.

Now the writer has revealed why these changes were made and how the events of 2016 informed her choice.

I felt that the Remain campaign had been complacent

Speaking to press including Express.co.uk, Lucy explained: “In the wake of Brexit and Trump, I as someone of the left wing went through quite a long process of looking at myself.

“I felt a bit ashamed and feeling that I had failed in some way because those two events as a result of half of two countries feeling listened to, that’s a very simplistic rendering of it.

“I felt that the Remain campaign had been complacent and I felt that the Hillary campaign had been complacent.

“One of the first things Alessandro [Nivola] said to me was how many times my character says sorry and I suppose that’s intentional because that’s sort of what I felt in the wake of Brexit and of Trump.
