Mr Hannan warned the catastrophic result for the Tories could give Labour under Jeremy Corbyn the chance to take power. The veteran Eurosceptic claimed the Tories could get “single figures” in next month’s election. A recent poll put the Conservatives on 15 percent for the vote, versus 27 percent for the Brexit Party.

Writing on the ConservativeHome website Mr Hannan commented: “We could sink into single figures next month.

“Keen to give us a bit of a slap, voters might knock us into a hold too deep for any future leader to clamber out of.

“The European election could mark the moment when, after 190 years, the Conservative Party ceases to be viable.”

European Parliament elections will take place in the UK on May 23, unless Parliament approves Theresa May’s Brexit deal before this date.
