Rare 50p coins can sell for huge sums of money on eBay.
Often times they sell for thousands, prompting Britons to wonder if they have a gold mine in their spare change?
Rare coins are often minted for commemorative reasons, making them the most highly collected.
One such example is this coin that sold for a large sum online.
eBay: Rare 50p coin honouring Stephen Hawking sold for £920
The eBay listing, posted by seller ‘trytime22’, read: “Celebrate one of science’s brightest stars in fine gold.
“Few have done more than Stephen Hawking to reframe our understanding of time and space.
“His groundbreaking work on black holes paved the way for a unifying theory of everything, the holy grail of modern physics.
“As we embark on a brand-new series of coins commemorating innovators in science, we celebrate the life of this brilliant physicist.
“Struck in 22 carat gold and finished to finest Proof standard, this 50p coin features a design by printmaker Edwina Ellis inspired by Hawking’s wit, which was always evident alongside his genius.”
The coin was bid upon be three people, and the bidding started at £850.
So is the coin rare? This coin in particular is very rare, in fact it is one of 400. It comes with a unique number, which is 239.
Royal Mint sold a number a different versions of the coin, however, they are all sold out.
A brilliant version of the 50p coin sold for £10. A silver coin in a presentation box, one of 5,500, was sold of £55.

A piedfort version of the coin, one of 2,500, sold for £95. The gold version of the coin was sold for £795.
