A recent survey of elected grassroots Tories found three quarters of Mrs May’s councillors wanted her to resign, with 43 percent of them calling her to quit immediately. Just over half said they would vote Tory in the European election - a figure that would rise to 65 percent if the Prime Minister was replaced by leading Brexiteer Boris Johnson, according to a Survation poll for the Mail On Sunday. A further 40 percent said they would vote for Mr Farage’s Brexit party.

However, this figure would plummet to 22 percent if Mr Johnson was in Number 10.

A staggering 96 percent agreed that the party has been damaged by the Brexit deadlock.

One councillor in the Survation study said: "The Conservative Party is dead. It will take a strong leader to dredge it out of the mud."

Another said: "For God's sake get on with Brexit - it is killing us on the doorstep."
