The pro-Brexit International Trade Secretary said Parliament, which is supposed to elect the net European Commission president later this year, “will have an effect on the formation of the next commission”, according to the Telegraph. He said: “The last thing our European partners want are 50 disruptive and resentful UK MEPs.” The UK has a to elect a total of 73 MEPs from Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Dr Fox’s comments come after support for Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party has surged.
Mr Farage has warned that while many Tories backed Ukip in the last European elections temporarily, “this time, things appear to be different.”
He wrote in the Telegraph: “Millions of natural Tory voters have said emphatically that they will never vote Conservative again.”
According to an ORB poll for the Telegraph, the Brexit Party would gain 14 percent of votes in a general election while the Tories are still trailing three points behind Labour.
