He claimed the UK's carbon dioxide emissions have fallen dramatically and suggested they protest in China instead. However the former Mayor of London did admit he has some sympathy with the demonstrators, and is deeply concerned about ecological damage. Activists from Extinction Rebellion have been occupying key roads and bridges in central London since Monday.

They are demanding the UK reduce its net greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2025.

Writing in the Telegraph, Mr Johnson commented: “I share some of the irritation at these climate change protestors.

“I am not in favour of paralysing public transport in the greatest city on earth, and stopping people from getting to work.

“I don’t want some double-barrelled activist telling me that air travel is only to be used in emergencies, when his own Instagram account contains pictures of his recent skiing holiday.”
