MPs on the executive of the back-bench 1922 committee will meet on Tuesday to decide whether to tear up the rules to allow a new vote of no confidence in May before December. Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the 1922 committee, is set to tell Mrs May that 70 percent of her MPs now want her to resign for botching Brexit. She may also be accused of presiding over a collapse in Tory support.
Insiders say “swing voters” are leaning towards changing the rules unless she agrees to go by June 30.
Grassroots campaigners are set to announce this week that more than 65 constituency chairmen are to appeal to the prime minister to step down.
The current climate means a convention to change the rules is highly possible.
