Each year on April 23, England commemorates our patron saint, St George. With legends dating back to the 4th century, including battles with dragons, St George is a celebrated figure in Christianity. Many across the UK are returning to work after a four day weekend following the Easter bank holiday - but should this have been a five day bank holiday?

St George is said to have slain a dragon and stood up for his beliefs in refusing to renounce Christianity. 

April 23 is the day the revered saint died and is celebrated each year with the St George’s flag flying high, and St George’s Day parades across the country. 

St George’s Day was once celebrated as widely as Christmas but this ended after England united with Scotland in the 18th century.

Who was St George? 

Whilst not much is known about St George’s life, some historical texts point to him being a Cappadocian Greek soldier and a member of the Pretorian Guard for the Roman emperor, Diocletian.

After refusing to give up his Christian beliefs, St George was sentenced to death - becoming one of the most revered saints in Christianity.
