Cruise ship holidays are a dream for many passengers but they can quickly switch to a nightmare should a passenger fall sick. If a holidaymaker is unwell during a shore excursion this might prove particularly tricky but, should it happen on-board, they are better able to be catered for. At least one on-ship doctor is on hand, with the ability to perform minor surgery. Yet if a passenger’s situation gets worse, the ship captain can take the lead and initiate extreme action.
Former cruise ship doctor Ben McFarlane has revealed just what can happen in this instance, and how the scenario may play out.
In his new book, Cruise Ship SOS, he wrote of a similar, real life situation, and detailed: “We’re getting within range of the boats and helicopters that can do an emergency evacuation.”
He added: “And the captain is steaming ahead to get us to our next port as quickly as possible as well.
“Everyone is doing everything they can to help this man.”
Fortunately, for this particular passenger, the captain’s actions paid off.
