Flight passengers often arrive at the airport in a flurry of holiday fever, ready to take to the skies for their overseas excursion. Yet for some, their nerves about flying can overshadow their excitement. While the majority of plane journeys prove entirely safe, a handful are not. Flight author Christopher Barlett has now flagged the most dangerous times for pilots and passengers, while highlighting what the latter can do to better protect themselves.

In his new book, Plane Clever, he insists the overall safety of the aviation industry and states: “The approach and landing are perhaps the most incident prone parts of the flight, but unlike other cases, a mishap is much less likely to be completely catastrophic.

“In the very, very unlikely event of something untoward happening, remember the brace position … and that it not only limits your injuries but, perhaps even more importantly, increases the chance of you being able to save yourself before being overcome with smoke.

“As said, the number of people who survive even the most horrendous-looking accidents is astounding, with breaks in the fuselage providing exits.

“Determination and forethought such as noting the location of the nearest exits can save your life.”
