Ann Widdecombe, a Conservative grandee, stalwart of the Tories and a lifelong supporter, has made the decision to join the Brexit Party. That such a hugely respected and influential figure should do this at such a time shows quite what a terrible state politics is in today. For Ann is a conviction politician, a woman who, unlike many in her profession, makes decisions based on what she really believes rather than what would benefit her career.
Indeed, as she writes today, she had no desire to return to the political fray, but wanted to enjoy a well-earned retirement. That she has felt the need to do so is both selfless and an indicator of an almighty national mess.
