The surprise winner, who was a star on the hit television show Servant of the People, took a resounding 73 percent of the vote on Sunday. His landslide victory gives him the mandate, but it is not clear so far what policies he will pursue. He does, however, want to hold direct talks with Russia to try and restore peace in the conflict areas.
There has been a five year conflict between the two countries that has claimed around 13,000, after Russia annexed the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea in 2014 and backed separatists in eastern Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin was not immediately vocal in his delight over Mr Zelensky’s win.
In a conference call with reporters on Monday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov warned he would have to prove himself first.
He said: "Regarding the Ukrainian elections, so far it's too early to talk about any congratulatory wishes from President Putin to Mr Zelensky, just as it's too early to talk about the possibility of working together.
