Brexiteers have been warned to consider the risks of forcing Theresa May out of Number 10 over her failure to strike a Brexit deal by the original withdrawal date of March 29. Conservatives grassroots are to haul the Prime Minister in front of an extraordinary meeting of the National Conservative Convention (NCC) in June to demand Mrs May step down. But economist Peter Dixon told Bloomberg having her resign could pose a risk for the next British leader: "The real problem would be how it changes negotiations with the rest of the EU.

"On the assumption a new Prime Minister was in place, despite the fact Brexit hasn’t actually been delivered properly yet, you’re going to find a situation where the European leaders are faced with the possibility of a Boris Johnson, who they seemingly don’t trust, or another pro-Brexit minister who they don’t think they can work with.

"That’s going to make life much more difficult to get not only Brexit across the line but to get the future relationship between the UK and the EU sorted out."

Theresa May has been the subject of heavy criticism from members of her party after she agreed to a further extension to the Brexit process to seek support for her proposed withdrawal deal.

Due to Mrs May’s decision to delay Brexit until to October 31, the UK is now expected to take part in the European parliamentary election of May 23.
