Polls across the country have now closed in what is expected to be a dramatic night for the 2019 local elections that is expected to see Mrs May’s Conservative Party haemorrhage seats as punishment for her handling of Brexit. Voters in local wards across the country have reacted angrily to there being no Brexit Party option on the ballot paper, with some spoiling their papers in protest. Some angry voters scribbled anti-May statements across the papers, labelling the mainstream parties as 'traitors'.

One polling card from Bury in Greater Manchester said: "Get May out".

Another had 'Brexit Party' written in place of the mainstream parties in an act of protest.

Meanwhile there have also been reports of confusion after some voters turned up with their European election polling cards.

After the Prime Minister begged the EU for three Article 50 extensions - from March 29 to April 12 and eventually Halloween - the Conservatives now fear they could shed up to 1,000 seats in a catastrophic night for the warring party.

Such a result would place even further pressure on Mrs May to resign as Tory leader.

Conservative Campaign HQ (CCHQ) have said they can limit losses to “around 500 to 600 on a good night”, according to The Sun.
