Coronation Street viewers will see Norris Cole (played by Malcolm Hebden) return to the ITV soap next week and ask Mary Taylor (Patti Clare) for a divorce.
Norris has been absent from the cobbles for the past 18 months after the actor suffered a heart attack but he will be returning to drop a huge bombshell on his wife, Mary.
The Weatherfield icon won’t be returning to the Street on his own and instead he will be joined by his new fiance Freda Burgess (Ali Briggs).
When Norris returns to discuss his divorce with Mary, she quickly becomes suspicious over his relationship with his new fiancé.
In an interview with ITV Patti revealed: “She can’t quite believe it, she is in shock. She just thinks that something else is going on that she doesn’t know anything about, but she wants to get to the bottom of it.
“She feels that Freda has a weird hold over Norris. She can’t understand why Norris would want to be with Freda.
“It’s not so much about Norris not wanting to be with Mary, because their marriage wasn’t a true marriage, but on good days Mary likes to remind Norris that their marriage was a celebration of their friendship and it might not have been a conventional marriage but it was more a celebration of that.”
Last week, Freda returned to the soap to reveal to Mary that Norris has agreed to a divorce and Mary was’t happy that her husband wasn’t the one to tell her.
She continued: “She is more hurt that Norris hasn’t talked to her about it, not so much that he has asked for it. But that is her pride.
