According to The Daily Telegraph, the Prime Minister is secretly planning to call a three-option referendum if Brexit negotiations between the Labour party fall down. Mrs May and the Labour leader will carry out crunch talks this week with the former under increasing pressure to deliver Brexit. Recently, Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell, said it “may well” be the case that any deal would have to be put to a second vote.
Mr McDonnell said: “I think the Conservatives have to recognise that if a deal is going to go through there might be a large number of MPs who will want a public vote.”
The Labour MP also cast doubt on cross-party talks after accusing the Prime Minister of “acting in bad faith” by leaking details of what would be discussed on Tuesday.
Mrs May and her advisers have reportedly war-gamed the idea of calling a referendum with the options of a no deal Brexit, remain and the Prime Minister’s own Brexit plan.
Government sources insisted that there had been no meeting to discuss the possibility of a second referendum.
