Schumacher Jr, 20, who is driving in the Formula 2 Championship this season, is already the second-best rookie after the first four F2 races of the year, suggesting he might have what it takes to emulate his father, who suffered tragic head injuries in a skiing accident in 2014. He told Sky Sports: “I do not really compare myself with someone who is currently driving in Formula 1. “Of course, I compare myself with my father.”
He explained he always looked closely at “what steps he has taken and what he did differently than the others”and considered “what I can take away” from a race.
Stressing he was not in a rush to get a seat in an F1 car, he said: “It is very important to go one step at a time, as we have done so far, and now Formula 2 should be the final step before Formula One.”
In 2016, Schumacher became runner-up in the German Formula 4 and then moving up to the European Formula 3 Championship, winning the title last year.
Schumacher Jr, who describes F2 as “very good preparation for Formula 1”, is ninth in the overall standings after the first two race weekends.
