United States space force gets green light (Image: GETTY)
The Trump administration proposed the creation of a new force in order to maintain America’s position as the dominant space authority. Upon the discussion of the new force, many criticised its speculated increase on the Pentagon’s annual funding from $2billion (£1.5million). The estimated cost of the reorganisation of the military’ space enterprise would also require a start up fee of between $2-5billion (£1.5-£3.8billion).
However, recently acting Secretary of Defence Patrick Shanahan argued the mammoth fee was “overstated”.
Speaking to the Senate Appropriations defence subcommittee, Mr Shanahan said: “The $2billion, in my view, is overstated.
“I think that detracts from the real value of the Space Force.”
Although some have bulked at the cost, Pentagon officials have concluded that a new military branch for space is inevitable.
