Conservative businessman Mike Greene, 54, will stand for Mr Farage’s grassroots eurosceptic party, in a bid to win a seat in the House of Commons at its first attempt on June 6. Mr Greene, who is a former trustee of Peterborough cathedral, has amassed a fortune in his career and appeared on the Channel 4 series ‘The Secret Millionaire’ in 2011. The 54-year-old, who voted Tory all his life, has condemned the Governments handling of Brexit and insisted the UK needs to have “control of our laws, our borders, our trade in a democratic way”.

He wrote on Twitter: “I am proud to be taking on the challenge of standing for the Brexit Party and rebuilding trust in democracy.”

Mr Greene was raised in a council house near Luton, before moving to Peterborough in 1975, aged just 11-years-old.

Having left school with eight O Levels, he built a successful career as a retail entrepreneur and took on consultancy roles at large companies including Phillips and Shell.

In 2012, the British businessman sold his research consultancy firm Him! and pumped investments into the hugely popular music app Shazam, before it was eventually sold to tech giant Apple.
