Flights can be pretty scary in lots of ways but there are lots of rules in place to protect plane passengers. Some passengers get ideas into their heads about what happens when a plane crashes - which experts know are wrong. There’s one thing that a pilot has revealed crew hate overhearing among travellers.

Pilot Patrick Smith explained in his book Cockpit Confidential that it’s theories about seatbelts that really get to pilots.

“Keep your belts low and tight,” Smith said. “Nothing is more aggravating than hearing a passenger voice the theory that should a crash occur, they are guaranteed to perish, so what’s the point?

“Most crashes do have survivors, and something as simple as a properly buckled belt could mean the difference between serious and minor injury.”

Smith also elaborated on the other things passengers are made to do at takeoff and landing, including putting your tray table away and keeping your seat upright.
