Brexit uncertainty has caused havoc with the pound to euro exchange rate and a shift in UK holidaymakers’ travel patterns. The former has seen sterling embark on a torrid eight day decline, a downward spiral which is still continuing. Meanwhile, the latter has seen a surge in bookings to Turkey, according to Thomas Cook Airlines. For those worried they’ll simply be losing money by converting their hard-earned pounds to euros, there is help at hand courtesy of a new survey, which has revealed the cleanest UK beaches.

Findings from Ann’s Cottage in Cornwall considered UK beaches which met a variety of criteria, including a Water Quality Rating of ‘Excellent’, a Blue flag status and are a Seaside Award holder.

It also considered negligible traces of e. coli or enterococci in the past year.

In total, seven beaches in England made the list, seven in Wales and one in Scotland.

A spokesperson said of the findings: “We might not enjoy the sunshine of the Mediterranean or the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean, but it’s easy to forget that the UK is home to some truly beautiful coastline.”

English beaches which made the cut include Carbis Bay, in Cornwall, as well as Poole Canford Cliffs Chine, Poole Sandbanks Peninsula, and Poole Shore Road Beach, both in Poole.

In Wales, Anglesey was favourable with two top sunshine-soaking sandy spots of Llanddwyn and Church Bay.

The sole Scottish entry was Achmelvich in Lairg.
