According to Cancer Research, in the UK alone 450 people died every day as a result of the disease between 2014 and 2016. That's about 166,000 deaths a year and many thousands of other people have also had their lives devastated by the loss of a friend, a spouse or a relative. As experts point out today one of the great barriers to tackling cancers is that they are resistant to treatment by drugs - so a new medicine that can prevent this will make a vast difference to mortality rates and the comfort of treatment for patients.
The story is a tribute to the excellence of medical research in this country which is unequalled around the world.
The new research centre's focus on finding new ways to tackle cancer has been described as a "really exciting new development".
