Mr Johnson announced he would run in the next Tory leadership race but members of the party fear some MPs are planning a “stitch-up” to block Mr Johnson to keep him out of Number 10. According to The Daily Telegraph, MPs have been pledging to other colleagues that they will lend each other supporters in order to stop Mr Johnson becoming the leader. President of the Gainsborough Conservatives, Roger Patterson claimed the current party election system was “like a dictatorship”.
While John Strafford, Chairman of the National Conservative Convention said: “Were Boris to be excluded it would be an absolute disgrace - members would just protest with their feet and leave the party.”
The current party system states that every candidate must be approved by their fellow MPs who are then put forward in a ballot until there are just two final candidates.
When there are two candidates left, the two are then chosen by the Conservative Party membership.
