The disgusted Tory says it is only through sheer luck that no one was killed in the incident in Strathaven, near Hamilton. He said: “It’s shocking to think that someone is trying to murder you in your own home.” Councillor Campbell, his wife Fiona and their teenage son were asleep at their home in Fortrose Gardens when the attacker set fire to a BMW sitting in the drive. The flames quickly spread to their integral garage and the house before the family were woken by a passer-by. Mr Campbell said: “I heard a bang and it woke me up then my wife heard someone knocking on my door but I told her not to open it. I then went down and the person said my car was on fire and the car was just an inferno.

“The fire has spread to the front of the house. The front of the garage has gone. The next door neighbour’s house has also taken some damage.

“I’m just devastated by this. Ten minutes later and the house would have gone up. Our bedroom is above the garage.”

The politician, who was elected in 2007 and again in 2017, believes he was deliberately ­targeted because of his work on local issues.
