The UK has never had an isolationist foreign policy and has always sought to be involved with the lands across the sea and Mr Hague describes this attitude as formative in what makes the UK excel. The former Foreign Secretary said: “This is a country where the banker and the farmer, the merchant and the manufacturer, have, over the centuries, done well together.” Mr Hague spoke about the uniqueness of this country as being one of a harmony between urban dynamism and rural idyl and tradition, the sum of which has ensured Britain excel in trade, industry and creativity throughout the centuries.

Describing the connection between the rural and the urban, the ex-Conservative leader said: “The proximity of these two worlds is one of the causes of our prosperous history.

“The development of agriculture in a country with easy access to its coastline brought the growth of trade and finance on which the City was built.”

The former Foreign Secretary added: “A medium sized island we can enjoy one of the greatest global concentrations of culture, wealth and round-the-clock excitement in an extraordinary city and yet also disappear in a few hours into some of the finest countryside to be found anywhere on Earth.”
