Ms Rees-Mogg, who ran unsuccessfully to be an MP in 2005 and 2010, is a fervent Brexiteer and now a candidate in the East Midlands for the Brexit Party in the European Parliament elections. Before the 2010 election, Mr Cameron reportedly asked Ms Rees-Mogg to shorten her name for political purposes to Nancy Mogg. Although her brother has insisted this was “a joke”, she has said she is proud of her name and doesn’t want to be a “phoney”.
Ms Rees-Mogg refused the request and ran under her full name in her Somerton and Frome constituency, but lost to Liberal Democrat David Heath.
It was after this that Mr Cameron had her deselected as a candidate.
Mr Cameron was accused of trying to ‘de-toff’ his ranks, after he pulled the same stunt with Richard Grosvenor Plunkett-Ernle-Erle-Drax, who was eventually billed as Richard Drax.
However, Ms Rees-Mogg disagreed with this conclusion at the time, telling the Daily Mail in 2009 that Mr Cameron is “a man of integrity”.
