Major death in first episode of #CallTheMidwife revealed amid plot twist

Fans of Call The Midwife have been given a sneak peak at series nine as they eagerly await the return of the show after series eight came to an emotional end earlier this year. 

The official synopsis of the new series has been released and it hints at a number of new challenges for the team. 

It reads: “As the tower blocks multiply and a new East End rises from the ashes of the old, society becomes more prosperous, but more complex. 

“Our familiar team of medics and midwives face unexpected challenges as the population shifts, rules change, and old diseases come back to haunt them.”

Drug abuse, cancer and tuberculosis are some of the cases the team will be dealing with in the upcoming season as well as coping with the threat of demolition to Nonnatus House. 

Will Nonnatus House be saved or could the future of the team be thrown into question? 

As well as these challenges, season nine, which is likely to air in early 2020, will kick off with the funeral of Winston Churchill in January 1965. 

The new series of the BBC drama has started filming and an image from the Christmas episode has given viewers an insight into what the team will be up to when the show returns. 

Mother Mildred (Miriam Margoyles) will lead the team to the Scottish Outer Hebrides where they will battle against the bleak conditions to help their patients before returning to Poplar for Christmas.
