The Russian Su-35 jets were met by F-22 fighters from the US Air Force near Alaska. Both incidents took place over Alaska’s Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ), but in international airspace. Tensions between Russia and the US have surged in recent years over Syria, Venezuela and Ukraine.
A Russian Defence Ministry statement confirmed the incidents took place.
One, released on Wednesday, said: “Two Tu-95MS strategic missile carriers of the Russian Aerospace Forces carried out planned flights in the airspace over the neutral waters of the Chukotka, Bering and Okhotsk seas, as well as along the western coast of Alaska.”
It claimed this was conducted “in strict accordance with the International Airspace Management System without violating the borders of other states”.
According to the statement the Russian flight took 11 hours.
