REVEALED: The heartbreaking image that had 'lasting effect' on Princess Diana

Princess Diana and Prince Charles married in their spectacular royal wedding in 1981. The Prince and Princess of Wales welcomed Prince William in 1982 and Prince Harry in 1984. However, it was an image from Prince Charles' childhood in 1954 that had a “lasting effect” on how Diana approached her parenting of their two sons.

The newly-crowned Queen Elizabeth II returned from her longest ever tour of the Commonwealth and came home to her children Prince Charles and Princess Anne, who had been left behind. 

Andrew Morton, in his 2011 book “William and Catherine”, describes the scene: “On greeting her eldest son, then aged five, after an absence of six months, the new Queen shook his hand rather than hugging him.”

He writes: “That image was to have a lasting effect on Diana, Princess of Wales.

“As she began to find her way inside the Royal Family, she resolved that her own children would never suffer such emotional remoteness.
