#HattonGarden writer reveals real-life connection to robbers in researching ...

Viewers have been gripped by screenwriter Jeff Pope’s take on the infamous Hatton Garden heist which occurred on the Easter Bank Holiday in 2015.

The four-part series has seen Harry Potter star Timothy Spall, 62, take on the role of Terry Perkins, whilst the gang’s initial leader Brian Reader has been portrayed by actor Kenneth Cranham, 74.

After Pope’s version of the robbery was put on hold due to the death of Perkins and subsequent court cases arising at the time of original broadcast, viewers have finally been treated to the ITV drama.

Hoping to be as accurate as possible, Pope and his creative team wanted to be as true to life as they could, with viewers seeing Perkins collapse following a diabetic episode in the second instalment.

“The number one source was the transcripts and we did have a route into one of the families [of the robbers], a back-door route shall we say.”

After the gang’s second successful attempt of robbing the vaults, they were seen transferring the goods into black bins which were later left outside one of their houses to not arose suspicion.

Of the diabetic attack and how the robbers got the goods out the vaults, Pope explained: “There were certain things like that’s how we knew about the bins being just left and Perkins having that diabetic episode, that’s how we knew that.”
