Theresa May’s days in Downing Street have come to an end. This morning, she announced she will stand down as Conservative leader on June 7, paving way for a Conservative Party leadership contest. The mutiny came after Mrs May unveiled her fourth Brexit plan, in which she put the option of a second referendum on the table for the first time, in a desperate bid to get the agreement through Parliament.
Her move prompted a ferocious reaction from within her party, and the resignation of Leader of the House of Commons Andrea Leadsom.
Jeremy Hunt and Boris Johnson are the early frontrunners among Tory MPs, the Conservative Home website has suggested.
Former Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon told LBC this morning that he believes the reason Mrs May has failed is because she never truly believed in Brexit.
His claim echoes leading historian David Starkey’s argument, in which he exposed Mrs May’s tragic flaw by comparing her to Henry VIII.
