The former Foreign Secretary confirmed his bid for the Tory leadership last week and will likely be preparing for the race after Theresa May announced her resignation as Prime Minister this morning. Mr Johnson, who campaigned to leave the EU in 2016, dropped out of the leadership race triggered by David Cameron's resignation after his colleague Michael Gove pulled the plug. Mr Gove put himself forward for the role, but ultimately lost to Theresa May.

Now, Mr Johnson is poised to take the top spot for himself, with backers like former Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson and European Research Group chair Jacob Rees-Mogg.

Mr Johnson, a keen Brexiteer, discussed the inception of the European bloc in his book entitled ‘The Churchill Factor’.
