What made Winston Churchill think EU would be a ‘DISASTER’ revealed

Mr Johnson, a prominent Brexiteer, is the frontrunner in the upcoming Tory leadership election, after Prime Minister Theresa May announced her resignation on Friday. The former Foreign Secretary has called for the UK to leave the EU on October 11, with or without a deal. In his 2014 book ‘The Churchill Factor’ Mr Johnson explored the wartime Prime Minister’s relationship with Europe and how the EU could have turned out differently.

In the book Mr Johnson explained how Churchill criticised the Clement Attlee-run Labour Government for refusing an invitation to discuss a European precursor to the EU.

Churchill felt that the UK should be at the table, because without the UK’s influence the bloc could end up a “disaster”.

Mr Johnson wrote: “If Britain fails to engage, Churchill warns, then there is a risk that the European bloc will become a neutral force, equidistant between Moscow and Washington; and that, he believes, would be a disaster.”
