Classmate of Prince Charles and royal correspondent Ross Benson in his book, Charles ‘The Untold Story’, told how Princess Diana was not expected to attend the State banquet for President Mario Soares of Portugal at Buckingham Palace. According to Mr Benson, after leaving Prince Charles Diana was henceforth banned from every royal occasion. Only the Queen could enforce an order to allow her presence back at official royal occasions.
It is claimed that Diana suddenly phoned the Queen and announced she would attend the banquet and the Queen could not bring herself to enforce the ban.
The Queen refused to stand up to Diana, as Mr Benson wrote: “For the simple reason that the Queen was frightened of Diana.”
There was a deeper psychology at play, and Mr Benson states in the book that: “The Queen was frightened of the influence that Diana exerted over her sons, William and Harry.
“And most of all frightened over the future which she senses belongs to Diana.
“That is why the Queen shied away from telling Diana that she would be unwelcome at the State banquet.
