The US president said the former foreign secretary would be "excellent" in the role, just days before MPs start voting to replace Theresa May as Tory Party leader. He is said to have taken a liking to Mr Johnson after he “roamed” the White House “opening doors and saying hello to people”. A source told the Daily Telegraph: “Boris basically was just roaming the White House. He was opening doors and saying hello to people. They would say ‘oh my God it’s Boris, it’s Boris’.

“He met Ivanka Trump. He met Jared. Someone would grab him. They would say ‘come in to a meeting’. A White House staffer told us that no one else could do this.”

In an unprecedented intervention, Mr Trump said he also liked Jeremy Hunt, who is among those vying for the top job, but appeared to criticise Environment Secretary Michael Gove.

"I like him. I have always liked him. I don't know that he is going to be chosen, but I think he is a very good guy, a very talented person.
