Tory leadership race: Party to change rules (Image: GETTY)
There are now 13 candidates to take over from Theresa May and due to that number, senior MPs within the 1922 Committee are discussing a plan to accelerate the voting process. According to The Daily Telegraph, more than 10 MPs could be culled next week if they can declare the support of eight or 10 supporters within the party. The plan would be a huge change from the original format where one candidate is forced to withdraw after every round of voting.
One member told The Daily Telegraph the party wanted to avoid a “free for all” adding “there will definitely be a push to reduce the numbers more quickly”.
Amid two severe elections losses, former minister Ken Clarke said the current Conservative leadership race was a “shambles” and that there had “never been such a crisis” within the party.
Sam Gyimah was the latest Tory Mp to announce his campaign to become the next Tory leader and instantly announced his support for a second referendum on Brexit.
Mr Gyimah, however, will be seen as an outside candidate as Michael Gove and Boris Johnson have become the frontrunners in the race.
