A This Morning guest came on the show to discuss her two female pugs, Nelly and Pugley, who she said had a loving bond. Speaking about how she knew the dogs were in a lesbian relationship, she said: “We get to see what you consider in dog terms normal behaviour. These exhibit an intensity in the relationship that you would regard as a bonding, as a pairing.” Holly Willoughby, 38, then chipped in, looking slightly apprehensive.

“In what way does that manifest itself, dare we ask?” she queried.

“The first thing they do in the morning when they open their eyes is they lick each other’s faces, they lick each other’s ears,” the pug owner explained. “They sleep together in close contact.

“They have to have physical contact. It’s almost painful if they haven’t.”

While Holly looked to be trying to contain her giggles, Phillip Schofield, 57, chipped in: “That’s still two dogs getting on.”

“Then it progresses,” the guest insisted. “When things get very exciting during the day that may overspill into extra activities…”
