This morning, Boris Johnson emerged as the candidate wth the highest number of MPs backing him in the first ballot to select the Conservative Party leader and next Prime Minister. Mark Harper, Andrea Leadsom and Esther McVey are all now out of the running, after the secret ballot held in the House of Commons. There are currently seven candidates who will progress to the next round of voting and they will feature in a debate on Channel 4 this Sunday.

The winner is expected to be announced in late July.

Launching his campaign with a promise to unify a country deeply divided over Brexit, Mr Johnson said yesterday he would only take Britain out of the EU without a deal as a “last resort”.

The former Foreign Secretary said a new government with “new optimism” and “total conviction about the way forward” could find a way to compromise.

As the ex-Mayor of London takes what looks to be an insurmountable lead in the race, a 2015 interview has reemerged, in which he claimed had as much chance of being Prime Minister as being reincarnated as an olive.
