Tourists will only be able to explore the building for up to three hours as authorities try to limit overcrowding. If they overstay their visit they will be forced to pay a fine, the Times of India has reported. The move comes after a trial run of the turnstile gates with the rules becoming permanent yesterday. A total of 14 gates have been installed at the site - seven each on the east and west gates for entering the moment and five each on the two visitor exits. According to superintending archeologist, ASI (Agra circle), Vasant Swara told the Times of India that on Saturday 50,000 visitors came to the Unesco World Heritage Site and the new system caused no problems. Now, as the tourists leave via the exit gates, their time spent at the site will be recorded. Swarankar said, "If tourists exceed their time limit of three hours, they will be charged an extra amount equivalent to the ticket which will be paid at the exit gate. “Entry time will also be enforced and if tourists don't arrive at the allotted time, they will not be allowed entry and will have to buy a new ticket.” Foreign tourist tickets to the Taj Mahal cost 1,100 Indian Rupees (£12.53) with the optional added extra of visiting the main mausoleum for a further 200Rs (£2.28). The monument opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset during normal operating days. However, it is always closed on a Friday.
