Following the attack on an oil tanker last week, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council accused the US of being a "savage monster” on Tuesday. In response to last week’s attack, the US has sent an additional 1,000 troops to the region as acting US Defence Secretary, Patrick Shanahan accused the Islamic Republic of being behind the attack. Although Iran has denied the allegations, the state has called on countries around the world to unite against the US and “break up” its dominance on the financial system.
Attacking the US, Ali Shamkhani said: “It is essential that the independent countries in the world adopt multilateral mechanisms and stand against this savage monster and stop it and break up the dominance of the U.S. over the world's financial system.
“The US has destabilised the security of the international system through unilateralism and extra-terrestrial sanctions and has been using the financial and banking system as a weapon.”
Relations between the two countries turned sour following Donald Trump's withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty last February.
