#YearsandYears ending explained: What happened at the end?

Years and Years came to an end last night (Tuesday, June 18) on BBC One with the 'death' of one character and a touching tribute to Russell T Davies' husband Andrew Smith. Vivienne Rook's (played by Emma Thompson) premiership came to an end at the end of Years and Years, while Viktor Goraya (Maxim Baldry) escaped from an Erstwhile. BBC iPlayer is now streaming the Years and Years ending and viewers can read on for a full recap of what happened at the end of the series.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the end of Years and Years

The Years and Years ending sees Edith Lyons (Jessica Hynes) getting her consciousness downloaded into the internet.

With her body failing as a result of the huge dose of radiation she was exposed to way back in episode one, Edith gets persuaded to become ‘transhuman’, something Bethany Bisme-Lyons (Lydia West) has been talking about since the beginning of Years and Years.

The finale ends with the remaining Lyons assembled around Muriel Deacon’s (Anne Reid) Senor device, waiting to see if the operation has been successful.
