Years and Years came to an end last night (Tuesday, June 18) on BBC One with the 'death' of one character and a touching tribute to Russell T Davies' husband Andrew Smith. Vivienne Rook's (played by Emma Thompson) premiership came to an end at the end of Years and Years, while Viktor Goraya (Maxim Baldry) escaped from an Erstwhile. With her body failing as a result of the huge dose of radiation she was exposed to way back in episode one, Edith gets persuaded to become ‘transhuman’, something Bethany Bisme-Lyons (Lydia West) has been talking about since the beginning of Years and Years. The finale ends with the remaining Lyons assembled around Muriel Deacon’s (Anne Reid) Senor device, waiting to see if the operation has been successful. WILL THERE BE ANOTHER SERIES OF YEARS AND YEARS? The Years and Years ending saw Edith Lyons become transhuman (Image: BBC) This scene comes a number of years after the actions of the rest of the episode, however. Most of the episode focuses on two actions that directly play a part in the downfall of Vivienne Rook. One of these is Edith and her girlfriend Fran’s (Sharon Duncan-Brewster) attempts to smuggle Viktor out of one of the ‘Erstwhiles’, the concentration camps for immigrants Rook had set up. However, it is then revealed this was a diversion and the main aim of the operation had been to explode a signal mast that was preventing the migrants in the camp from communicating with the outside world. With this mast exploded, details of this camp are made public, leading to Rook being disgraced. Also helping with Rook’s downfall is Rosie Lyons (Ruth Madeley). After the doors are locked earlier, leaving Rosie’s son locked out, she decides enough is enough and drives her food van through the gates. Although Rook is imprisoned at the end of Years and Years, Edith suggests she may too have become ‘transhuman’ to evade punishment. Edith says that one of the main reasons she too has downloaded herself onto the cloud is to track Rook down and make her pay for the anti-migrant policies that lead to the death of her brother Daniel (Russell Tovey).
