Mr Stewart was the latest contender to drop out of the race after he only managed 27 votes in the third round of voting on Wednesday. Despite a slight surge in his fortunes in the second round, Mr Stewart fell out of the race and speaking on BBC Newsnight, admitted why he failed in the quest to become party leader. Mr Stewart said: “Members of Parliament that sincerely voted for me last time have gone to Michael Gove, Jeremy Hunt and Sajid Javid.
“They clearly decided for whatever reason that the message I was baring was not the one Conservative associations wanted to hear.”
Mr Stewart had gained some traction late on in the race following his performance on Sunday’s debate on Channel 4.
In a bold strategy, Mr Stewart had attacked his rivals over the undeliverable Brexit promises which he later admitted was something people “weren't quite ready to hear”.
Unfortunately for the MP for Penrith and The Border, his performance during the second debate on Tuesday saw his support drop dramatically.
