What would happen if US went to war with Iran?

Today’s news that Iran shot down a US drone over the Straits of Hormuz is yet another statement of defiance from Tehran. The Trump administration, despite insisting war is not an option, have consistently stoked jingoistic rhetoric over the past few weeks. Though a potential conflict may appear to be one-sided between the two militaries – the US boasts one of the largest forces in the world – experts warn that the US may come off worse in a war.

A war with Iran would not replicate the 2003 Iraq war, to say the least.

While it would still be a hot war – with the US army invading Iran using their navy, air force and ground troops – it is unlikely to be as one-sided as the conflict conducted by Washington 16 years ago.

With a population of 82 million people and the 14th most powerful military in the world, Tehran can call on over 750,000 active and reserve personnel in any conflict.

Compare this to the Iraqi military under Saddam Hussein, who had less than 450,000 troops to spare.

Though still dwarfed by Washington’s army, Iran can also take advantage of their greater land mass.

With 591,000 square miles of land – compared to Iraq’s 168,000 – and a terrain consisting of mountains rather than deserts, US ground forces would find it much tougher to operate.

Iran can also call on their allies and proxies – they have the support of both global powers and militant groups.
