US Senators were quick to blast the President for escalating tensions with Iran after a report in the New York Times claimed he had indeed authorised strikes on the nation. According to the article, US forces were in position to carry out the attacks in the early hours of the morning but an abrupt order from the White House called them off. After such a close shave with conflict, Democrats were quick to criticise Trump for his belligerence and rash nature.
Senator Elizabeth Warren, who is one of the front runners for the Democratic presidential nomination, slammed President Trump for pulling out of the nuclear deal that initially ramped up tensions last May.
Senator Warren also noted that Trump ran on a policy of isolationism in 2016 as he pledged not to get involved in foreign wars.
She said: “Donald Trump promised to bring our troops home.
“Instead he has pulled out of a deal that was working and instigated another unnecessary conflict.
“There is no justification for further escalating this crisis – we need to step back from the brink of war."
